Jose is a legendary jazz guitar player whose influence has been pivotal in the continuous development of the Malaysian jazz scene. Jose began his career in the early seventies and toured in one of the first pop/rock groups in the country, the “Ages” to Taiwan, Hong Kong and South Korea between ’78 and ’81. Jose was one of the original members of Malaysia’s foremost ethnic jazz fusion group, Asiabeat.
He is known as a music producer, music arranger and has produced several albums like Asiabeat, Micheal Veerapen’s “Pictures”. He has performed in numerous jazz festivals around the world, including the Hong Kong Arts Festival (1986), The Perth Arts Festival (1987), The Jakarta Jazz Festival (1992), The Malaysian Jazz Festival (1993 & 1994), The Bangkok Jazz Festival (1996) & The Java Jazz Festival 2005 among others.
Jose now has his own band, whose drummer is genetically supplied by him – his son, John Ashley Thomas. He formed “Groove Junction” six years ago and the band has performed in many places like Sunrise Jazz Festival in Mont Kiara.
Jose was one of the main organizers and central figures in the launch of Sunrise Jazz Fest in Plaza Mont Kiara in 2000 and has played consecutively at the Sunrise Jazz Fest in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2005.
In 2007, he accompanied the Prime Minister to Davos, Switzerland to perform with other artists for the closing soiree of the World Economic Forum. In October 2007, he led a 27-piece orchestra to perform for the prestigious “ Merdeka Awards” launched by Petronas. He was also the closing artist together with his Groove Junction for the Penang Jazz Fest in December 2007.
On December 31st, 2007, he led a 17-piece band to back 16 of the top local artists to perform for the Petronas Countdown at KLCC. He also performed in Hong Kong, Perth, Jakarta, Bangkok Jazz Festival with jazz artistes: Aubrey Suwito, Andy Peterson, Lewis Paragasm, Frank Gambale, Billy Sheehan, Abraham Laboriel and the list goes on.
He was a music director at Addaudio for 5 years from 1997 -2002,producing music for television commercials/radio and he was also the music director of Miragepost in Jakarta for 2years from 2004 to 2006. He was also the musical director for Zainal Abidin (international artist).
